Mid-Summer in the Community Garden

Mid-Summer in the Community Garden

The garden is my happy place in the summer months. Early in the morning, as the sun is coming up and before the heat of the day sets in. It’s quiet. It’s peaceful. It’s hopeful.

Our garden got a late start this summer, as our community garden underwent a huge renovation. The city needed to raise the land an additional 4 feet in order to accommodate the surrounding previous park renovation. The sad part was that all the gardeners lost 9 years of soil amendments and late summer crops from last year as well as early spring crops this year. But the perks far out way the inconveniences. We have beautiful raised beds, a new shed, a new fence and a fresh start. And most importantly, my beautiful zinnias and fresh vegetables are now making an appearance and are ready to be picked, eaten, printed and celebrated. It’s just now when I feel like summer is in full swing.
